Breaking Into Investment Banking: Skills, Salaries & the Path In

Investment banking analysts are the engine room of every major deal — the people who build the models, run the numbers, and prepare the pitch books that decide whether a merger, acquisition, or IPO goes ahead. It is demanding work, but it rewards skill with responsibility and compensation few other entry-level roles can match. In India, analyst roles typically start in the ₹8–14 LPA range and climb quickly with experience.
What analysts actually do
Strip away the prestige and the job is concrete. Analysts build financial models, value companies, prepare presentations for clients, and support senior bankers through live transactions. Long hours are real, but so is the responsibility — you are producing the numbers that multi-crore decisions rest on, often within your first year.
The work is analytical and detail-obsessed. A single broken formula in a model can change a valuation, so precision and stamina matter as much as intelligence.
The learnable skill set
The barrier to entry is not a fancy degree — it is proof that you can do the work. That means fluency in financial modelling and valuation: building three-statement models, running discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis, and performing comparable-company and precedent-transaction analysis.
These are learnable, structured skills. Someone who can build a clean model and defend a valuation is more employable than someone with an impressive CV but no demonstrable ability. The best preparation is a portfolio of deal-ready case studies, not just a certificate.
The tools of the trade
Real desks run on specific tools. Excel is the workhorse for modelling, and analysts are expected to know it deeply. Beyond that, market data platforms like Bloomberg, FactSet, and Capital IQ are used daily to pull financials, run comparisons, and research deals. Familiarity with these is a genuine advantage in interviews and on the job.
Getting deal-ready with CareerVeda
CareerVeda's 6-month PG Program in Investment Banking is built entirely around these deliverables. The curriculum moves from Excel modelling and valuation into M&A, IPO, and capital-markets workflows and LBO modelling — each module anchored in a real project you build and defend, guided one-on-one by mentors who have worked as bankers.
It also prepares you for the room: dedicated interview preparation, mock technical interviews, and a clear analyst-and-associate roadmap, backed by placement support. You graduate with a portfolio, not just a piece of paper.
